My Story

Rwanda and Uganda—two neighboring jewels in East Africa—each offer something incredibly special for travelers seeking meaningful encounters with nature and wildlife. Most notably, both countries are among the few places on earth where you can trek into lush forests and come face-to-face with endangered mountain gorillas, making gorilla trekking a life-changing experience in every sense.

But while they share this rare privilege, Rwanda and Uganda deliver it through different lenses—shaped by distinct geography, conservation philosophies, cultural landscapes, and accessibility. If you’re dreaming of a gorilla trekking adventure but unsure which destination aligns with your travel style, this guide is here to help.

Let’s explore the key differences—so you can choose the one that speaks to your heart.

Geography & Accessibility: How You’ll Get There

Rwanda – For Quick Access and Effortless Elegance

Known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” Rwanda is incredibly scenic with rolling green hills, volcanic peaks, and terraced countryside. Its compact size makes it easy to explore, and gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is just a 2–3 hour drive from Kigali International Airport. For those short on time or seeking a seamless travel experience, Rwanda makes it wonderfully easy to dive into the heart of the forest within hours of landing.

Uganda – For Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventure

Uganda’s diverse terrain stretches from savannahs to dense jungles, offering more of a rugged, remote experience. Gorilla trekking takes place primarily in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Getting there involves a longer 8–10 hour drive from Entebbe or Kampala, or a short domestic flight (with an added cost). The remoteness adds to the allure—Uganda is perfect for travelers who enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

Gorilla Trekking: Comparing the Experiences

Permit Costs

This is often the first question I get—and it’s an important one!

Rwanda: $1,500 per person

Uganda: $800 per person

Rwanda’s higher price tag reflects their investment in conservation and community programs, while Uganda’s more accessible pricing makes it a great value for those looking to include gorilla trekking in a broader East African itinerary.

Trekking Terrain

Rwanda: The treks here tend to be shorter and less strenuous, with some gorilla families located near the edge of the forest. If you’re looking for a gentler hike with a big reward, Rwanda could be your match.

Uganda: Bwindi is aptly named—it’s impenetrable. The forest is thick, the terrain can be steep, and treks can range from one hour to a full day. For active travelers, it’s an exhilarating challenge with a deeply rewarding payoff.

Gorilla Families & Permit Availability

Rwanda: Home to around 12 habituated families, with 80 permits available per day.

Uganda: Hosts over 20 families across multiple trekking regions, offering more than 160 permits daily—ideal for larger groups or those with more flexibility in travel dates.

Beyond Gorillas: Other Primate Experiences

Uganda shines for primate lovers:

Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale Forest National Park—one of the best places in the world to see them.

Golden Monkeys in Mgahinga National Park

• And playful sightings of red-tailed monkeys, colobus monkeys, and baboons throughout the country.

Rwanda also offers memorable encounters:

• Track golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park

• Visit Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzees, plus L’Hoest’s monkeys and Ruwenzori colobus monkeys swinging through the canopy.

Conservation & Community: How Tourism Gives Back

Rwanda is often praised for its holistic approach to conservation and community involvement. A portion of each permit supports local communities, and the annual Kwita Izina gorilla naming ceremony shines a spotlight on the country’s commitment to protecting these precious primates.

Uganda emphasizes cultural integration and community-based tourism. Many treks include meaningful interactions with the Batwa people, and visitor contributions help fund conservation initiatives and anti-poaching efforts. Both countries have created models that demonstrate how tourism can do good.

A Few More Differences to Consider

Wildlife Safaris

Uganda offers classic safari experiences in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls national parks—where you might spot elephants, lions, and hippos.

Rwanda’s Akagera National Park has made an exciting comeback in recent years, offering a more boutique safari experience with the chance to see the Big Five.

Cultural Experiences

• In Rwanda, a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial offers a profound and moving understanding of the nation’s resilience.

• In Uganda, the Kasubi Tombs and vibrant markets of Kampala give insight into the traditions of the Buganda kingdom.

Scenic Beauty

Lake Kivu in Rwanda offers peaceful lakeside lodges and sunset cruises.

Uganda’s Rwenzori Mountains invite hikers to explore glacial peaks and alpine beauty.

Final Thoughts

Whether you choose Rwanda or Uganda for your gorilla trekking adventure, you’re guaranteed a truly life-affirming experience. Rwanda offers luxury, ease, and thoughtful conservation leadership. Uganda brings the thrill of wild landscapes, deeper immersion, and a more budget-friendly approach.

Each destination is beautiful in its own right—and it really comes down to your travel style, interests, and how much time you have to explore.

If you’d like help deciding which destination is best for you—or if you’re dreaming of combining both into one unforgettable itinerary—I’d love to help craft your perfect journey.
