Egypt, Beyond the Photographs

01 January 2026

What made my ten days in Egypt so memorable, from an exceptional Egyptologist to early visits to the historical sites and time to enjoy the Nile.

I had seen the Great Pyramid of Giza in photographs countless times, but nothing prepared me for standing in front of it. I cried. Tears and sobs. The scale of it and the feeling of being there were overwhelming.

My Egypt trip lasted ten days, and I wouldn’t change anything. It was a perfect trip for me. We had an exceptional Egyptologist, wonderful service on the Nile and days arranged around the heat, with time to enjoy what we had come to see.

There were plenty of extraordinary places along the way. What made the journey so good was how they came together.

An Egyptologist Who Brings the Journey Together

The history is a large part of why you go to Egypt, and I would give serious thought to who will guide you through it. Our Egyptologist was highly experienced, with years of study behind their knowledge. That showed in the way they told the story and connected one visit to the next.

Seeing Tutankhamun’s mask in the museum in Cairo, then going to the Valley of the Kings to visit his tomb, was particularly memorable. What we had seen in the museum carried through to the site. We were learning more about the same people and history as the journey continued.

Over ten days, it became an in-depth story. Our Egyptologist could refer back to something we had already seen, explain its significance and help us understand how it fitted with where we were standing. That continuity made an enormous difference.

For a first visit, I would choose a reputable operator and ask carefully about the Egyptologist. You want someone with the depth of knowledge to bring the history together and keep you interested throughout the journey.

Choose the Season, Then Plan the Days

We travelled in October. It was a wonderful trip, but even then the middle of the day could be hot. We explored early in the morning and rested during the hottest hours, which worked beautifully.

Knowing when to travel is key in Egypt. I would consider the season alongside the route and how much time you will spend outside, particularly around Luxor and Aswan. If you find heat uncomfortable, that needs to be part of the planning from the beginning.

The daily arrangements matter too. An early visit followed by time to rest can make a day much more enjoyable than trying to fit another site into the hottest hours. There is a great deal to absorb, and I appreciated having that break.

Remember a wide-brimmed hat. Many sites have little shade outside the tombs, and you will be pleased to have it. Comfortable shoes and water are a must, regardless!

Why I Loved Our Time on the Nile

I sailed on an A&K Sanctuary Sun Boat, and the quality of service was exceptional. The private docks and carefully timed excursions also made a difference. We arrived early at historical sites, ahead of the larger groups, and could enjoy the visits before they became busier.

Those are the details I would look at when choosing a Nile cruise. Alongside the cabins, I would ask about the Egyptologist, where the vessel docks and how the excursions are timed. These arrangements helped make our sailing so enjoyable.

I enjoyed the smaller vessel and the care we received, but I also loved simply being on the river. The dunes and palm trees along the Nile are among my strongest memories of Egypt. Watching the landscape between visits was a pleasure, and having time to enjoy it was part of what made the cruise so good.

When planning Egypt, it is easy to concentrate on the historical sites. I would give the river journey just as much attention.

Stay an Extra Day in Cairo

Do allow an extra day in Cairo to visit the bazaar. It is iconic: the smells, the bustle and the high energy make it an experience in its own right. I would make time for it alongside the museums and pyramids.

The food throughout my trip was exceptional, and one particularly special evening was dinner on the Four Seasons Nile boat in Cairo. The food and the setting together made it memorable. It was a lovely way to spend an evening and something I would gladly make room for in a Cairo stay.

A trip to Egypt can become very focused on sightseeing. Meals, the bazaar and time on the river bring another side of the country into the journey. They deserve room in the itinerary too.

Give Yourself Time to Be There

There is so much you will want to photograph in Egypt. Take the photographs, but put the phone down occasionally and listen to the story. Look at the detail your Egyptologist is pointing out and give yourself time to take it in.

I knew the Great Pyramid would be extraordinary. I still hadn’t expected to feel so emotional when I stood beside it. That moment stays with me, just as clearly as the Nile landscapes, the food and the history our Egyptologist brought together over ten days.

If Egypt is a trip you have been thinking about, tell me what draws you there. I’ll help you choose the time of year, the right Nile vessel and the guiding arrangements that will make the journey work for you.
